The Story
What is actually happening
On 28 July 2026 FIFA announced a consultation on FIFA Forward Enterprise, a new subsidiary that would hold the commercial rights to the World Cup: broadcast, sponsorship, ticketing and licensing. Up to $4.2bn of it would be sold to private investors, priced against a $20bn valuation.
This is not a sponsorship deal
Sponsorships expire. Broadcast deals expire. Equity does not. Whatever is sold this year is sold for every World Cup there will ever be. There is no expiry date, no buy-back clause, and no future congress that can vote it back.
Your association is being offered $20m
Every one of the 211 member associations votes, and every one has been offered a one-off payment of up to $20m alongside that vote. The raise is up to $4.2bn. The payments come to roughly $4.22bn. The money handed to associations is, near enough, the entire proceeds of the sale, paid once.
The arithmetic nobody is publishing
Divide $4.2bn by 211 and you get $19.9m. That is the breakeven. Professional investors are paying that much per association's share because they expect it to be worth more. An association accepting $20m is being paid roughly the minimum value of what it gives up, permanently.
Who is buying
Thrive Eternal, founded by Joshua Kushner, is expected to lead the investor group. J.P. Morgan is running the raise. Greg Maffei, who ran Liberty Media when it bought Formula One, is advising. Those are the facts, and they are all we assert.
"The soul and governance of football are not assets to trade, especially with zero transparency as to who gains financially."
UEFA, July 2026"FIFA would retain sole control of FFE via majority board representation and exclusive authority over football governance, competitions, the international match calendar and all regulatory and sporting decisions."
FIFA media release, 28 July 2026. The shareholders' agreement has not been published, so the reserved matters, distribution policy and exit rights remain unknown.
